There was no surprise when 12th ranked Torino (1-4) was defeated at home by sixth ranked Empoli (3-2) 83-69 on Sunday. Empoli looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. The best player for the winners was Czech center Kamila Stepanova (191-88, agency: Basket Promotion Agency) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points and 10 rebounds. American guard Maci Morris (181-96, college: Kentucky) chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds. Bosnian Melisa Brcaninovic (193-99, agency: BeoBasket) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and point guard Ilaria Milazzo (170-94) added 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals respectively for the hosts. Five Empoli and four Torino players scored in double figures. Empoli moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Lucca and Sesto SG. Loser Torino dropped to the tenth position with four games lost. Empoli will face higher ranked San Martino (#3) in San Martino di L in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Torino will play on the road against Broni (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
