There was a minor upset in Bilbao where one of their biggest challengers RETAbet BB (4-4) was defeated by twelfth ranked Gran Canaria (4-4) 97-90 on Saturday. Gran Canaria looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. RETAbet BB was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was American-Lithuanian John Shurna (204-90, college: Northwestern) who scored 19 points and 8 rebounds. American-Montenegrin point guard Omar-Sharif Cook (186-82, college: St.John's) chipped in 16 points and 9 assists. Czech center Ondrej Balvin (217-92, agency: Octagon Europe) produced 16 points and 6 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) and French swingman Axel Bouteille (200-95, agency: BeoBasket) added 20 points respectively for the hosts. Five Gran Canaria and four RETAbet BB players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Gran Canaria moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 7 other teams including defeated RETAbet BB. Gran Canaria will face UCAM Murcia (#11) at home in the next round where they are favorite. RETAbet BB will play against the league's leader Real Madrid (#1) and hope to win that game.
