Regular Season Round 8: Vigarano - Empoli 66-78

The biggest surprise of round 8 in Serie A1 was guest Empoli's (5-3) road victory over Vigarano (#8) 78-66 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Vigarano. Empoli made 17-of-20 free shots (85.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American power forward Erin Mathias (193-95, college: Duke) who scored 24 points and 6 rebounds. Czech center Kamila Stepanova (191-88, agency: Basket Promotion Agency) chipped in a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. Four Empoli players scored in double figures. Nigerian forward Pallas Kunaiyi (188-97, college: Northwestern, agency: LBM Management) produced 9 points and 23 rebounds and guard Giulia Natali (176-2) added 16 points respectively for the hosts. Empoli moved-up to sixth place. Vigarano at the other side dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. They share it with Broni and Sesto SG. Empoli are looking forward to face higher ranked Lucca (#3) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Vigarano will play against San Martino (#5) in San Martino di L and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
