Regular Season Round 11: Mondragon - Zarautz 97-65
Date: December 1, 2019
The game between closely ranked teams ended with 5th ranked Zarautz's (5-4) road loss to fourth ranked Mondragon (7-2) 65-97 on Sunday. Mondragon dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Zarautz's 28. Mondragon forced 19 Zarautz turnovers and outrebounded them 42-27 including a 33-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American center Zach Kirschbaum (208-93, college: Trinity Intern.) who had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 12 rebounds (on 11-of-12 shooting from the field). Swingman Andoni Atxa (195-99) chipped in 20 points and 7 rebounds. Five Mondragon players scored in double figures. Forward Julen Egana (193-96) produced 9 points and Aitzol Eguskitza (193-90) added 12 points respectively for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the third consecutive win for Mondragon. They moved-up to second place in Group A-A, which they share with Pas Pielagos. Newly promoted Zarautz dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. Mondragon will face Pas Pielagos (#3) in Renedo de Pielagos in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Zarautz will play on the road against Solares (#4) and hope to win that game.
