Everything could happen in Las Palmas at the game between two tied teams. Both third ranked Gran Canaria and 5th ranked Unicaja had identical 6-3 record. This time Gran Canaria used a home court advantage and outleveled the opponent from Malaga 99-69 on Saturday night. Gran Canaria dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to Unicaja's 38. They outrebounded Unicaja 46-29 including a 34-14 advantage in defensive rebounds. American guard Sparkle Taylor (178-95, college: UTEP) fired 29 points and 4 assists for the winners. Mali power forward Sika Kone (190-2) chipped in a double-double by scoring 18 points and 15 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Four Gran Canaria players scored in double figures. Power forward Veronica Matoso (185-88) produced 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and point guard Gema Garcia (165-85) added 14 points respectively for lost side. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to get some rest. Gran Canaria maintains third position in Group B with 7-3 record having just two points less than leader Estudiantes, which they share with Lima-Horta and Ardoi. Newly promoted Unicaja dropped to the sixth place with four games lost. Gran Canaria will face Almeria (#8) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. Unicaja will play against Ardoi and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
