There was a surprise result when seventeenth ranked Sturgeons (5-12) outplayed higher ranked Leopards (8-9) in Shenzhen 114-77 on Sunday. Sturgeons dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Leopards' 44. They outrebounded Leopards 57-34 including a 43-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Sturgeons looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 14 passes made by Leopards' players. It was a very good performance for American point guard Ty Lawson (180-87, college: UNC) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!) and 12 assists. The other American import forward Dante Cunningham (203-87, college: Villanova) contributed with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 20 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners. Four Sturgeons players scored in double figures. Swingman Xining He (193-97) replied with 16 points and 5 rebounds and American forward Jarell Martin (208-94, college: LSU) added 14 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Leopards. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Sturgeons moved-up to sixteenth place, which they share with Guangzhou LL. Loser Leopards dropped to the twelfth position with nine games lost. Sturgeons will face Long-Lions (#17) in Guangzhou in the next round.
