There was a minor upset when 8th ranked Empoli (5-7) was smashed on the road by tenth ranked Palermo (4-8) 89-63 on Sunday. Palermo dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Empoli's 34. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Empoli's players. It was a good game for American-Montenegrin center Markeisha Gatling (196-92, college: NC State) who led her team to a victory with 29 points and 5 rebounds (on 14-of-16 shooting from the field). Francesca Russo (176-96) contributed with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Lithuanian forward Gabriele Narviciute (190-90) replied with 11 points and 8 rebounds and American guard Maci Morris (181-96, college: Kentucky) added 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) in the effort for Empoli. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Newly promoted Palermo maintains tenth position with 4-8 record. Empoli lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth place with seven games lost. Palermo will face higher ranked Lucca (#4) on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
