Top ranked Panathinaikos (12-2) recorded its second loss in Athens on Sunday night. Visitors were edged by third ranked AEK (10-4) 100-97. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Panathinaikos. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Panathinaikos won third quarter 23-22. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. AEK made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 18 long-distance shots on high 58.1 percentage. The best player for the winners was American power forward Marcus Slaughter (204-85, college: San Diego St.) who scored 10 points and 8 rebounds. International point guard Nick Calathes (197-89, college: Florida) produced 20 points and 7 assists and the former international Konstantinos Mitoglou (209-96, college: Wake Forest) added 14 points and 8 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) respectively for the guests. Five AEK and four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. AEK have an impressive nine-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Promitheas. Defending champion Panathinaikos still keeps top position with two games lost. AEK is looking forward to face Kolossos HH (#12) in Rodou in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Panathinaikos will play at home against Lavrio (#6) and is hoping to win this game.
