There was a small surprise when sixth ranked New Zealand Breakers (9-11) beat their close opponent Melbourne Phoenix (8-11) in Melbourne, Victoria 97-92 on Sunday. New Zealand Breakers looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American swingman Scotty Hopson (200-89, college: Tennessee) who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 8 assists. New Zealand forward Thomas Abercrombie (198-87, college: WSU) contributed with 24 points for the winners. New Zealand Breakers' coach Dan Shamir used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American guard John Roberson (180-88, college: Texas Tech) replied with 31 points and 8 assists (made all of his seven free throws) and the former international forward Dane Pineau (206-94, college: St.Mary's, CA) added 17 points and 20 rebounds in the effort for Melbourne Phoenix. Five Melbourne Phoenix players scored in double figures. New Zealand Breakers have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain sixth position with 9-11 record, which they share with Bullets. Melbourne Phoenix at the other side dropped to the eighth place with 11 games lost. New Zealand Breakers is looking forward to face Bullets (#7) in Brisbane in the next round. Melbourne Phoenix will play on the road against Illawarra Hawks in Gwynneville and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
