Regular Season Round 25: Kataja - Vilpas 89-88

The most exciting game of round 25 in the Korisliiga took place in Joensuu. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of much higher ranked Vilpas (19-5) to seventh ranked Kataja (12-11) 89-88 on Wednesday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Vilpas. Vilpas was trailing by 5 points at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 28-24 charge of Kataja, which allowed them to win the game. They made 17-of-18 free shots (94.4 percent) during the game. Kataja outrebounded Vilpas 35-24 including 31 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Jamaican-Canadian point guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson (178-91, college: Calgary) who helped to win the game recording 22 points and 9 assists. American guard Earvin Morris (196-94, college: UTEP) contributed with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. International Mikko Koivisto (194-87, college: UNCG, agency: Blacktop Management) answered with 23 points and guard Henri Kantonen (198-97) added 14 points and 5 assists in the effort for Vilpas. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Kataja moved-up to sixth place. Vilpas at the other side keeps the second position with five games lost. Kataja are looking forward to face league's leader Seagulls in Helsinki in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Vilpas will play at home against Lahti and is hoping to win this game.
