Regular Season Round 17: Hawks - SE M. Phoenix 82-90

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 9th ranked Illawarra Hawks' (5-17) home loss to eighth ranked Melbourne Phoenix (9-11) 82-90. Melbourne Phoenix players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. The former international forward Dane Pineau (206-94, college: St.Mary's, CA) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 19 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!). American guard Kendall Stephens (201-94, college: Nevada) contributed with 20 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Power forward Samson Froling (212-0, college: Creighton) answered with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds and guard Sunday Dech (196-94, college: Barry) added 13 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for Illawarra Hawks. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Melbourne Phoenix moved-up to seventh place. Illawarra Hawks lost fourth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with 17 games lost. Melbourne Phoenix's next round opponent will be league's leader Kings in Sydney and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Illawarra Hawks will play on the road against Bullets (#6) in Brisbane and hope to win that game.
