Regular Season Round 17: Rio Claro - Sao Paulo 94-90

An interesting game took place in Rio Claro where 4th placed Sao Paulo (12-5) was upset on the court of tenth ranked Rio Claro (7-9) 94-90. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Sao Paulo. Rio Claro made 22-of-26 charity shots (84.6 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 25 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by Sao Paulo helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American Walter Baxley (193-84, college: Mars Hill) orchestrated the victory by scoring 22 points. The former international power forward Gerson Santo (206-91, college: Colorado St.) contributed with 22 points and 6 rebounds (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) for the winners. Rio Claro's coach Fernando Penna allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. The former international point guard Georginho de-Paula (195-96) answered with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists and naturalized American Shamell Stallworth (195-80, college: USF) added 22 points in the effort for Sao Paulo. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Rio Claro maintains tenth place with 7-9 record. Sao Paulo at the other side dropped to the second position with five games lost. Rio Claro's next round opponent will be Sao Jose (#15) at home which should be theoretically an easy game. Sao Paulo will play against Sao Jose (#15) and hope to win that game.
