Regular Season Round 26: Seagulls - Kataja 97-74
Date: January 15, 2020
Korisliiga top team - Seagulls (22-4) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed seventh ranked Kataja (13-13) in Helsinki 97-74. It looked good early as Kataja took a 1-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Seagulls had a 20-18 second period charge getting the lead and Kataja was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 74-97. They outrebounded Kataja 45-27 including a 15-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. Seagulls players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. American guard Elijah Stewart (196-95, college: USC) notched a double-double by scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the effort and international Shawn Huff (198-84, college: Valpo) supported him with 21 points. Seagulls' coach Jussi Laakso felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Even 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists by Jamaican-Canadian point guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson (178-91, college: Calgary) did not help to save the game for Kataja. American swingman Jarekious Bradley (196-90, college: SEMO) added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Seagulls have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 22-4 record. Kataja at the other side dropped to the sixth place with 13 games lost. Seagulls will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Kataja will play at home against Pyrinto (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
