Regular Season Round 17: Palermo - San Martino 84-89

There was no surprise when 10th ranked Palermo (6-11) was defeated at home by fourth ranked San Martino (12-5) 89-84 on Saturday. San Martino made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. Lithuanian Egle Sulciute (190-85) stepped up and scored 21 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists (was perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and American-Puerto Rican guard Jazmon Gwathmey (188-93, college: JMU) chipped in 16 points and 11 rebounds. Four San Martino players scored in double figures. Spanish point guard Laia Flores (171-96, college: S.Florida) responded with 9 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists and forward Marta Verona (178-94) scored 14 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). San Martino have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain fourth place with 12-5 record. Newly promoted Palermo keeps the tenth position with 11 games lost. San Martino will meet at home league's second-placed Venezia in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Palermo will play against Ragusa (#3) and hope to secure a win.
