Eighth-ranked Melbourne Phoenix (9-17) made lots of trouble for first ranked Kings (19-8) in Melbourne, Victoria on Sunday. The visitors from Sydney managed to secure only three-point victory 99-96. However their fans expected much easier game. 26 personal fouls committed by Melbourne Phoenix helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. The best player for the winners was American forward JaeSean Tate (193-95, college: Ohio St.) who scored 17 points and 9 rebounds. His fellow American import point guard Casper Ware (178-90, college: LBSU) chipped in 24 points. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard John Roberson (180-88, college: Texas Tech) who recorded 19 points and 6 assists and international swingman Mitch Creek (196-92) added 14 points and 9 rebounds respectively. Four Kings and five Melbourne Phoenix players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Kings maintains first place with 19-8 record. Melbourne Phoenix lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 17 games lost. Kings are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Illawarra Hawks (#9) in Gwynneville in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Melbourne Phoenix will play at home against United and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
