Regular Season Round 19: Panionios - AEK 96-101 OT

Twelfth-ranked Panionios (6-13) gave a tough game to second ranked AEK (15-4) in Athens on Saturday. The visitors managed to secure only five-point victory 101-96. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Panionios won fourth quarter 24-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening, at least not yet. The game turned upside-down in the last quarter, where Panionios used huge pressure winning it 24-19 getting a tie at the end of regular time. They lost eventually overtime period 12-16. AEK made 24-of-28 free shots (85.7 percent) during the game. AEK outrebounded Panionios 40-23 including 29 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Panionios was plagued by 27 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for American Keith Langford (193-83, college: Kansas) who led his team to a victory scoring 23 points. Lithuanian forward Jonas Maciulis (198-85) helped adding 10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. AEK's coach Ilias Papatheodorou used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side American guard Rickey McGill (185-97, college: Iona) responded with 19 points, 6 assists and 4 steals and the other American import swingman Devin Sweetney (198-87, college: St.Francis, PA) scored 19 points and 6 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. AEK have an impressive series of fourteen victories in a row. They maintain second place with 15-4 record having just two points less than leader Panathinaikos. Panionios lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the twelfth position with 13 games lost. AEK will face Iraklis (#7) in Thessaloniki in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Panionios will play on the road against Lavrio (#6) and hope to win that game.
