Very expected game when 7th ranked Rioja (1-2) was smashed by top-ranked Ferrol (4-0) in Azkoitia 99-52 on Sunday. Ferrol shot 63.6 percent from the field. Ferrol had a 24-12 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 55.6 percentage. It was a very good performance for swingman Irene Gari (185-94, college: Georgia Tech) who helped to win the game recording 23 points. Point guard Patricia Cabrera (174-91) contributed with 23 points for the winners. Five Ferrol players scored in double figures. American guard Morgan Green (170-96, college: UC Irvine, agency: Gamble Sports Management) replied with 15 points and 7 assists and Cameroonian forward Marguerite Effa (190-97, college: Nevada) added 10 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Rioja. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Ferrol have a solid four-game winning streak. They keep a position of Group A leader. Loser Rioja dropped to the eighth place with two games lost. Ferrol will face Barakaldo (#5) in Vizcaya in the next round. Rioja will play on the road against Coruna and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
