Regular Season Round 5: Coruna - Rioja 60-77

There was a minor upset when 6th ranked Coruna (2-3) was defeated at home by ninth ranked Rioja (2-2) 77-60 on Saturday. Rioja dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Coruna's 36. Rioja had a 36-25 advantage in offensive rebounds. American guard Morgan Green (170-96, college: UC Irvine, agency: Gamble Sports Management) stepped up and scored 19 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and her fellow American import guard Crystal Primm (180-97, college: FAU) chipped in 12 points and 9 rebounds. Four Rioja players scored in double figures. Forward Andrea Perez (178-93) responded with 15 points and 9 rebounds and Laura Cervelo (-97) scored 9 points and 12 rebounds. Coruna's coach Jorge Carreira let to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Rioja moved-up to fifth place, which they share with 4 other teams. Newly promoted Coruna dropped to the eighth position with three games lost. Rioja will face higher ranked RC Celta (#3) in Vigo in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Coruna will play on the road against Barakaldo (#5) in Vizcaya and hope to win that game.
