A very close game took place in Las Palmas between Maquinaria Ensino and Gran Canaria. Ninth ranked Maquinaria Ensino (9-11) got a very close victory on the road over 13th ranked Gran Canaria (5-14). Maquinaria Ensino managed to escape with a 3-point win 83-80 on Saturday evening. Maquinaria Ensino looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The winners were led by Serbian point guard Aleksandra Stanacev (167-94) who scored that evening 12 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists and the former international forward Vega Gimeno (185-91, college: RMU) supported her with 20 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Even 20 points by American guard Sparkle Taylor (178-95, college: UTEP) did not help to save the game for Gran Canaria. Guard Marta Hermida (180-97, college: Boise St.) added 14 points and 8 rebounds for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Maquinaria Ensino moved-up to eighth place. Newly promoted Gran Canaria keeps the thirteenth position with 14 games lost. Maquinaria Ensino will meet at home Zaragoza (#11) in the next round. Gran Canaria will play against Promete in Logrono and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
