Regular Season Round 16: Ionikos - Lavrio 88-89

Ninth-ranked Ionikos (6-10) used its home court advantage to challenge third ranked Lavrio (11-4) in Aigaleo on Sunday. The visitors from Lavrio managed to secure only one-point victory 89-88. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Ionikos won fourth quarter 24-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Ionikos 42-29 including 28 on the defensive glass. Lavrio looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The winners were led by Petros Geromichalos (203-94) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 11 points and 12 rebounds and American forward Devin Davis (198-95, college: Houston) supported him with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Five Lavrio players scored in double figures. Even 25 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) by American forward Jeremy Hollowell (203-94, college: Georgia St., agency: Network Sports International) did not help to save the game for Ionikos. His fellow American import point guard Adam Smith (185-92, college: Georgia Tech, agency: Network Sports International) added 22 points and 6 assists for lost side. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Lavrio have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 11-4 record behind leader Panathinaikos. Newly promoted Ionikos keeps the ninth place with ten games lost. Lavrio will meet at home Peristeri GS (#5) in the next round. Ionikos will play against the league's leader Panathinaikos (#1) in Athens and hope to secure a win.
