Very expected game when 6th ranked Tskhum-Abkhazeti (6-8) lost to second ranked Kutaisi (11-4) in Tbilisi 83-89 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 4 points at the halftime before their 26-14 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Kutaisi forced 19 Tskhum-Abkhazeti turnovers. Strangely Tskhum-Abkhazeti outrebounded Kutaisi 42-27 including 17 on the offensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Tskhum-Abkhazeti was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of Cape Verdean-Portuguese forward Joel Almeida (195-85, college: Brockport St.) who helped to win the game recording 27 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. American point guard Kaheem Ransom (183-93, college: SHSU) contributed with 17 points for the winners. International forward Aleksandre Phevadze (206-98) answered with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists and the former international center Giorgi Sharabidze (210-90) added 14 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Tskhum-Abkhazeti. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Kutaisi maintains second place with 11-4 record having just one point less than leader Rustavi. Tskhum-Abkhazeti lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth position with eight games lost. Kutaisi will have a break next round. Tskhum-Abkhazeti's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Tbilisi to the arena Mgzavrebi.
