Everything went according to plan when sixth ranked Empoli (14-8) beat at home 12th ranked Sassari (4-19) 79-70 on Sunday. Empoli dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Sassari's 34. The best player for the winners was American power forward Erin Mathias (193-95, college: Duke) who had a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds. Her fellow American import guard Kamiah Smalls (178, college: JMU, agency: LBM Management) chipped in 21 points. American guard Kennedy Burke (185-97, college: UCLA, agency: Wasserman) produced a double-double by scoring 29 points and 10 rebounds and Slovakian forward Michaela Fekete (190-94, college: USF) added 17 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the guests. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Empoli. They moved-up to fifth place. Newly promoted Sassari keeps the twelfth position with 19 games lost. Empoli will meet Broni (#11) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Sassari will play against Broni and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
