There was a surprise result when twelfth ranked Gran Canaria (2-3) defeated higher ranked Ensino (2-3) in Lugo 65-54 on Sunday. They outrebounded Ensino 39-21 including 28 on the defensive glass. Mali power forward Sika Kone (190-2) nailed a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds for the winning side and Bahamas guard Valerie Nesbitt (173-98, college: Ole Miss) accounted for 9 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. Four Gran Canaria players scored in double figures. Gran Canaria's coach Jose Ramos used a ten-player rotation saving starting five for next games. Power forward Laura Aliaga (182-94) came up with 12 points and 6 rebounds and guard Marina Lizarazu (173-95, college: Iona) added 11 points respectively for Ensino in the defeat. Gran Canaria moved-up to eighth place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Ensino. Ensino lost their third game in a row. Gran Canaria will meet at home higher ranked Araski (#6) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ensino will play against Clarinos in San Cristobal and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
