Regular Season Round 8: Culleredo - Gijon Basket 69-78

There was a surprise result when fourteenth ranked Gijon Basket (2-6) won against on the road higher ranked Culleredo (3-5) 78-69 on Saturday. Gijon Basket forced 20 Culleredo turnovers. The winners were led by American forward Mateo Sanchez (198, college: Hood) who scored that evening 16 points and 7 rebounds and swingman Carlos Suarez (186-99) supported him with 17 points. Four Gijon Basket players scored in double figures. Even 26 points and 5 rebounds by Fernando Vidal (200-97) did not help to save the game for Culleredo. Pau Gonzalez (192-2) added 18 points and 6 rebounds for the hosts. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Gijon Basket moved-up to twelfth place in Group A-B, which they share with Avila and Ourense. Loser Culleredo dropped to the eleventh position with five games lost. Gijon Basket will meet at home higher ranked Univ.Valladolid (#10) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Culleredo will play against Ourense and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
