Regular Season Round 9: Acunsa GBC - Girona 85-81

Not a big story in a game in San Sebastian where 14th ranked Girona (2-7) was defeated by ninth ranked Acunsa GBC (5-4) 85-81 on Sunday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Strangely Girona outrebounded Acunsa GBC 45-31 including 31 on the defensive glass. American forward Benjamin Simons (203-91, college: Drake) stepped up and scored 18 points for the winners and Icelandic point guard Aegir Steinarsson (185-91, college: Newberry, agency: Duran International) chipped in 11 points and 8 assists. The best for the losing side was Portuguese power forward Goncalo Delgado (204-98) with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 11 rebounds and point guard Albert Sabat (181-85) scored 11 points and 6 assists. Four Girona players scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Acunsa GBC moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Melilla and Castello. Girona lost seventh consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the fifteenth position with seven games lost. They share it with Juaristi ISB. Acunsa GBC will meet league's second-placed Oviedo on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Girona will play against Huesca (#17) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
