Regular Season Round 9: Sassari - Faenza 88-86

A very close game took place in Sassari between Sassari and Faenza. Tenth ranked Sassari (3-5) got a very close home victory over 13th ranked Faenza (2-7). Sassari managed to escape with a 2-point win 88-86 on Sunday evening. Sassari made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. They also forced 23 Faenza turnovers. Strangely Faenza outrebounded Sassari 49-28 including a 34-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American forward Jessica Shepard (193-96, college: Notre Dame) who had a double-double by scoring 26 points and 14 rebounds. Her fellow American import guard Maggie Lucas (178-91, college: Penn St.) chipped in 30 points and 7 assists (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line). At the other side the best for losing team was Nigerian forward Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah (188-97, college: Northwestern, agency: LBM Management) who recorded a double-double by scoring 20 points and 28 rebounds and American guard Jori Davis (176-89, college: Indiana) added 20 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists respectively. Faenza's coach Diego Sguaizer tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Sassari moved-up to ninth place. Newly promoted Faenza dropped to the twelfth position with seven games lost. They share it with Costa Masnaga. Sassari will meet higher ranked Lucca (#5) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Faenza will play against Ragusa (#4) and hope to secure a win.
