Regular Season Round 4: Samara - Piestanske C. 70-74

There was a minor upset when 8th ranked Russian Samara (2-1) lost at home to tenth ranked Slovakian Piestanske C. (2-2) 74-70 on Wednesday. The guests trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 39-33 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Piestanske C. made 22-of-27 free shots (81.5 percent) during the game. They also forced 21 Samara turnovers. Strangely Samara outrebounded Piestanske C. 45-25 including a 33-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. The winners were led by forward Dominika Rusinakova (183-94) who scored that evening 17 points and Finnish forward Veera Pirttinen (180-97) supported her with 11 points. Even a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds by American forward Trinity Baptiste (183-98, college: Arizona) did not help to save the game for Samara. American-Puerto Rican point guard Jennifer ONeill (165-90, college: Kentucky, agency: LBM Management) added 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Piestanske C. moved-up to sixth place. Newly promoted Samara dropped to the fourth position with one game lost. They share it with Rostov. Piestanske C. will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Samara will play against Olimpia (#11) and hope to secure a win.
