Regular Season Round 14: Unicaja - Barakaldo 88-83

Very expected game when 8th ranked Barakaldo (7-7) lost to fourth ranked Unicaja (10-3) in Malaga 83-88 on Saturday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Unicaja dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Barakaldo's 36. They outrebounded Barakaldo 43-30 including 17 on the offensive glass. Unicaja looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Power forward Veronica Matoso (185-88) notched 20 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the effort and Cristina Ugochukwu supported her with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Unicaja's coach used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Even a double-double of 30 points and 11 rebounds by American forward Alexus Johnson (188-94, college: Texas Southern) did not help to save the game for Barakaldo. Uruguayan point guard Florencia Niski (165-2) added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the guests. Four Barakaldo players scored in double figures. Unicaja moved-up to third place in Group A. Barakaldo at the other side keeps the eighth position with seven games lost. Unicaja will meet Leon (#5) on the road in the next round. Barakaldo will play against Cordoba and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
