Regular Season Round 12: Apollon P. - Panathinaikos 48-90
Date: January 17, 2022
Very predictable result when second ranked Panathinaikos (9-1) rolled over 9th ranked Apollon P. (4-7) in Patra 90-48 on Monday. The game without a history. Panathinaikos led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Apollon P. to just 7 points in second quarter. Panathinaikos dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Apollon P.'s 26. They outrebounded Apollon P. 42-26 including a 32-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Panathinaikos looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Apollon P.'s players. The winners were led by Serbian guard Nemanja Nedovic (192-91, agency: BeoBasket) who scored that evening 17 points and 5 assists and the former international guard Eleftherios Bochoridis (196-94) supported him with 17 points. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Even 12 points and 8 rebounds by American forward DeJon Davis (203-98, college: CBU) did not help to save the game for Apollon P.. The former international Georgios Tsalmpouris (216-96, college: Iowa St.) added 13 points and 5 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Panathinaikos have an impressive nine-game winning streak. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Olympiacos. Apollon P. lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the tenth place with seven games lost. Panathinaikos will meet at home bottom-ranked Iraklis (#13) in the next round which should be another easy win for them. Apollon P. will play against Aris in Thessaloniki and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
