There was no surprise in Helsinki where 5th ranked Vilpas (9-8) was defeated by third ranked Seagulls (12-4) 85-79 on Wednesday. Vilpas was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 30-23 charge of Seagulls, which allowed them to win the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Guard Lassi Nikkarinen (187-97, college: Montana St.) had a double-double by scoring 15 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American Joe Lawson (201-92, college: Indianapolis, agency: Inception Sports) chipped in 16 points during the contest. Lawson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. The best for the losing side was American power forward Jeremiah Wood (200-85, agency: Inception Sports) with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists and his fellow American import guard Brian Fobbs (196-98, college: Towson) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Five Seagulls and four Vilpas players scored in double figures. Seagulls maintains third position with 12-4 record having six points less than leader Kauhajoki. Defending champion Vilpas keeps the fifth place with eight games lost. Seagulls will meet Kobrat (#9) in the next round where they are favorite. Vilpas will play against Kataja (#10) and hope to secure a win.
