Regular Season Round 13: Kataja - HNMKY 92-81

The game between ninth ranked Kataja (3-7) and 10th ranked HNMKY (1-9) in Joensuu on Saturday ended with biggest points difference. Kataja beat guests from Helsinki 92-81. The game was mostly controlled by Kataja. HNMKY managed to win third quarter 26-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded HNMKY 50-27 including a 22-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. Kataja looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by HNMKY helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of center Miika Smolander (201-3) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points and 18 rebounds. Point guard Kalle Kuivalainen (183-5) contributed with 20 points and 8 assists for the winners. Kataja's coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Forward Leo Makipaa (190-4) answered with 21 points and 4 assists and forward Arttu Kumpulainen (191-4) added 15 points and 8 rebounds in the effort for HNMKY. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Kataja moved-up to eighth place. HNMKY lost ninth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with nine games lost. Kataja are looking forward to face higher ranked Kouvot (#4) in Kouvola in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. HNMKY will play on the road against Raiders (#3) in Jarvenpaa and is hoping to prove to their supporters that they can break losing series.
