There was a surprise result when thirteenth ranked GDKO Bizkaia (3-11) crushed higher ranked Coruna (7-9) in Galdakao 72-52 on Saturday. GDKO Bizkaia forced 21 Coruna turnovers. Mozambican center Carla Covane (190-99, college: Cumberlands) nailed a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds for the winning side and Olaia Arenas accounted for 13 points and 7 rebounds. Four GDKO Bizkaia players scored in double figures. American swingman Amy Griffin (183-96, college: La Salle) came up with 28 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and forward Beatriz Sanz (180-90) added 12 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Coruna in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. GDKO Bizkaia maintains thirteenth place in Group A with 3-11 record. Coruna lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with nine games lost. GDKO Bizkaia will meet higher ranked Rosalia (#11) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Coruna will play against Unicaja and will have a slim chance for a victory.
