Regular Season Round 16: Athena-UMFK - Hamar 72-83

Athena-UMFK (#4) was upset in Reykjavík by seventh ranked Hamar 83-72. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Athena-UMFK. The game was mostly controlled by Hamar. Athena-UMFK was better in second period 16-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Hamar dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Athena-UMFK's 32. The winners were led by American swingman Astaja Tyghter (175-96, college: Tampa) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 35 points (!!!), 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals and American-Polish forward Julia Demirer (187-81, college: Emmanuel, GA) supported her with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Even a double-double of 36 points (!!!) and 15 rebounds (made all of her eleven free throws !!!) by American guard Violet Morrow (173-97, college: EWU) did not help to save the game for Athena-UMFK. Point guard Tanja Brynjarsdottir (171-7) added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for lost side. Hamar maintains seventh position with 7-6 record. Newly promoted Athena-UMFK dropped to the fifth place with six games lost. Hamar will play against Fjolnir 2 (#10) in Reykjavik in the next round. Athena-UMFK will play on the road against the league's second-placed IR (#2) having rather not much hope for a victory.
