Regular Season Round 20: Valle de Egues - Santander 79-84

There was a small surprise when thirteenth ranked Santander (7-14) beat 11th ranked Valle de Egues (8-13) in Olaz 84-79 on Sunday. Santander outrebounded Valle de Egues 39-27 including a 32-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. The winners were led by Beninese center Soulemane Chabiyo (198-96) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds and David Melero (190-91) supported him with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Four Santander players scored in double figures. Even 36 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) by power forward Javier Lacunza (203-94, college: FAU) did not help to save the game for Valle de Egues. Point guard Alex Calvo (180-91) added 9 points for the hosts. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Santander maintains thirteenth position in Group A-A with 7-14 record. Loser Valle de Egues keeps the eleventh place with 13 games lost. Santander will meet at home higher ranked Mondragon (#3) in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Valle de Egues will play against Burgos Nissan (#5) and hope to secure a win.
