There was an upset when higher ranked Reggio Emilia (10-10) was edged at home by twelfth ranked Varese (9-11) 84-82 on Friday. Varese looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Estonian Siim-Sander Vene (201-1990) nailed 23 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side and guard Giovanni De Nicolao (191-1996, college: UTSA) accounted for 13 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. Four Varese players scored in double figures. Varese's coach Johan Roijakkers used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The former international guard Andrea Cinciarini (191-1986) came up with a double-double by scoring 27 points, 9 rebounds and 12 assists and Lithuanian Osvaldas Olisevicius (200-1993) added 18 points respectively for Reggio Emilia in the defeat. The victory was the third consecutive win for Varese. They moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Venezia and Trento. Loser Reggio Emilia dropped to the fifth position with ten games lost. They share it with Brindisi and Tortona. Varese will meet Napoli (#12) on the road in the next round. Reggio Emilia will play against Cremona (#16) and hope to secure a win.
