Second Stage Round 7: Vilpas - Kouvot 88-89

The most exciting game of round 7 in the Korisliiga took place in Salo. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 3rd placed Vilpas (18-11) to second ranked Kouvot (20-9) 89-88 in the game for the second place. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Vilpas. The guests were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. They outrebounded Vilpas 45-33 including 32 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international center Hannes Polla (211-1998, college: UT Martin) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 18 points and 12 rebounds. American guard Tray Boyd III (193-1998, college: ETSU) contributed with 23 points for the winners. American power forward Bryan Griffin (203-1998, college: Xavier, agency: Inception Sports) answered with a double-double by scoring 30 points and 14 rebounds and the other American import guard Brian Fobbs (196-1998, college: Towson) added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Vilpas. Five Kouvot and four Vilpas players scored in double figures. Vilpas' coach Sami Toiviainen rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Kouvot have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain second place with 20-9 record having just seven point less than leader Kauhajoki. Defending champion Vilpas keeps the third position with 11 games lost. Kouvot are looking forward to face Seagulls (#5) in Helsinki in the next round. Vilpas will play on the road against KTP Basket in Kotka and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
