Second Stage Round 9: Vilpas - Seagulls 80-87

The game between third ranked Vilpas (19-12) and fifth ranked Seagulls (18-13) was the most important one in the last round on Saturday night. Vilpas was defeated by Seagulls in a tough game in Salo 80-87. Vilpas trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 21-16 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 80-87 at the end of the game. Seagulls looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Vilpas' players. American Joe Lawson (201-1992, college: Indianapolis) stepped up and scored 25 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and the former international guard Lassi Nikkarinen (187-1997, college: Montana St.) chipped in 16 points and 9 assists. Lawson is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Seagulls' coach Jussi Laakso used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American guard Marcus LoVett Jr (183-1996, college: St.John's) with 15 points and 5 rebounds and the other American import power forward Bryan Griffin (203-1998, college: Xavier, agency: Inception Sports) scored 12 points and 8 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Seagulls moved-up to fourth place. Defending champion Vilpas keeps the third position with 12 games lost. Seagulls are looking forward to face KTP Basket (#5) in Kotka in the next round. Vilpas will play on the road against Pyrinto in Tampere and is hoping to win this game.
