Regular Season Round 5: Stjarnan - KR 87-79

Round in D1 means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Stjarnan where host Stjarnan (4-0) beat league's leader KR (3-1) 87-79 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of KR. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 27-16 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Stjarnan dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to KR's 32. Stjarnan forced 36 KR turnovers. The best player for the winners was American center Riley Popplewell (180-1997, college: USC Upstate) who had a double-double by scoring 30 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals. Guard Dilja Larusdottir (172-2003) chipped in 30 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 9 steals. American guard Violet Morrow (176-1997, college: EWU, agency: Interperformances) produced a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!), 20 rebounds and 4 assists and forward Fanney Ragnarsdottir (172-1996) added 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for the guests. Stjarnan have a solid series of four victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader. KR at the other side dropped to the fourth place with one game lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Stjarnan. KR will play next round against Armann trying to make it back to the top of the standings. It will be a derby game for which supporters look forward to, where their team will travel locally in Reykjavik to the arena of Armann. Stjarnan will try to continue on its current victory against third ranked Thor AK in Akureyri.
