Regular Season Round 7: Kataja - Seagulls 76-77

There was a minor upset when 6th ranked Kataja (3-3) was edged by ninth ranked Seagulls (3-4) in Joensuu 77-76 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 23-16 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Kataja outrebounded Seagulls 46-25 including a 17-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was an exceptional evening for the former international guard Lassi Nikkarinen (187-1997, college: Montana St.) who led the winners and scored 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Forward Timo Heinonen (198-1981, agency: Blacktop Management) accounted for 19 points for the winning side. American-Nigerian forward Amaze Egekeze (203-1995, college: Belmont) came up with 18 points and 9 rebounds and American forward Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson (198-1991, college: Temple) added 17 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Kataja in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Seagulls moved-up to eighth place. Loser Kataja dropped to the seventh position with three games lost. Seagulls will meet at home Honka (#10) in the next round. Kataja will play against Nokia and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
