Regular Season Round 5: Ploiesti CSM - Targu Jiu 92-86

There was no surprise when bottom-ranked Targu Jiu (0-4) was defeated on the road by fifth ranked Ploiesti CSM (3-2) 92-86 on Saturday. Targu Jiu trailed by 13 points at halftime and as many as 16 after three quarters before a 26-16 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 86-92 at the end of the game. Ploiesti CSM shot 61.4 percent from the field. Ploiesti CSM outrebounded Targu Jiu 32-21 including a 23-11 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great shooting night for Ploiesti CSM especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 56.3 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Latvian Andris Misters (196-1992, college: Jacksonville) stepped up and scored 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners and American Kenney Funderburk (193-1992, college: Columbus St., agency: Mansfield and Associates) chipped in 17 points. Five Ploiesti CSM players scored in double figures. American guard Xavier Cannefax (188-1989, college: WPU, agency: Interperformances) responded with 25 points and Canadian Shamiel Stevenson (198-1998, college: Nebraska, agency: Interperformances) scored 19 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ploiesti CSM have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain fifth place with 3-2 record. Loser Targu Jiu still closes the standings with four games lost. Ploiesti CSM will meet Pitesti (#6) on the road in the next round. Targu Jiu will play against the league's leader Cluj Napoca and hopes to get finally their first victory.
