There was a minor upset when higher ranked Champagne (2-3) was smashed by eleventh ranked Calais (2-3) in Reims 71-47 on Saturday. Calais dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Champagne's 26 and made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Calais forced 19 Champagne turnovers and outrebounded them 46-33 including 34 on the defensive glass. American forward Shakayla Thomas (180-1996, college: FSU) nailed 32 points and 9 rebounds for the winning side and forward Anais Viellote (188-1991) accounted for 14 points and 11 rebounds. Calais' coach felt very confident using entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Estonian power forward Maaja Bratka (190-1992, agency: LBM Management) came up with 12 points and 9 rebounds and point guard Mathilde Domenger (171-2001) added 8 points and 4 assists respectively for Champagne in the defeat. Calais moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Champagne. Calais will meet at home higher ranked Chartres (#6) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Champagne will play against the league's second-placed Feytiat and will have a slim chance for a victory.
