Regular Season Round 9: Stjarnan - Haukar 76-77
Date: December 8, 2022
The most exciting game of round 9 in the Subway League took place in Stjarnan. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 6th ranked Stjarnan (4-5) to fifth ranked Haukar (6-3) 77-76 on Thursday evening. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 26-21. But Stjarnan won second period 20-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a good game for Lithuanian power forward Norbertas Giga (208-1995, college: JSU) who saved his team from a defeat with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Orri Gunnarsson (195-2003) contributed with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American point guard Robert Turner III (190-1993, college: Texas Tech, agency: Interperformances) answered with 19 points and 7 rebounds and the former international power forward Hlynur Baeringsson (199-1982, agency: IceBasket) added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists in the effort for Stjarnan. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Stjarnan's coach Arnar Gudjonsson rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Newly promoted Haukar maintains fifth place with 6-3 record. Stjarnan at the other side dropped to the seventh position with five games lost. They share it with Grindavik. Haukar are looking forward to face Grindavik (#8) at home in the next round. Stjarnan will play against Thor Thorl in Thorlakshofn and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
