Regular Season Round 19: Kotka - Kauhajoki 89-111
Date: January 3, 2023
Korisliiga top team - Kauhajoki (16-2) had no problems winning another game on Tuesday. This time they crushed sixth ranked Kotka (9-9) 111-89. The game was mostly controlled by Kauhajoki. Kotka managed to win second period 27-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Kauhajoki shot the lights out from three sinking 23 long-distance shots on high 57.5 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Lee Skinner (198-1992, college: Wofford) who helped to win the game recording 22 points and 6 rebounds. Point guard Severi Kaukiainen (185-1998, agency: Blacktop Management) contributed with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 10 assists for the winners. Swingman Vili Nyman (198-1998) answered with 14 points and 7 rebounds and American point guard Brandon Sly (180-1996, college: ASU) added 16 points and 4 assists in the effort for Kotka. Five Kauhajoki and four Kotka players scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Kauhajoki have an impressive series of fifteen victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 16-2 record. Kotka at the other side keeps the sixth position with nine games lost. They share it with Nokia. Kauhajoki will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Kotka will play on the road against Pyrinto (#9) in Tampere and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
