Regular Season Round 12: Stjarnan - Valur 76-80

Subway League top team - Valur (10-2) added another victory to their record on Thursday. This time they beat eighth ranked Stjarnan (5-7) 80-76. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 21-12. But Stjarnan won third quarter 18-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Valur made 19-of-24 free shots (79.2 percent) during the game. Strangely Stjarnan outrebounded Valur 55-40 including a 20-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. 24 personal fouls committed by Stjarnan helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a good game for the former international guard Kari Jonsson (192-1997, college: Drexel) who led his team to a victory with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. British forward Callum Lawson (198-1996, college: ACU, agency: Players Group) contributed with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Four Valur players scored in double figures. The former international power forward Hlynur Baeringsson (199-1982, agency: IceBasket) replied with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 15 rebounds and Danish guard Adama Darboe (190-1986, agency: Slash Sports) added 13 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in the effort for Stjarnan. Stjarnan's coach Arnar Gudjonsson rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Valur have a solid four-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 10-2 record. Stjarnan at the other side keeps the eighth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Hottur. Valur are looking forward to face Grindavik (#6) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Stjarnan will play against Keflavik and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win.
