Regular Season Round 17: Gran Canaria - Avenida 73-75

Ninth-ranked Gran Canaria (8-10) used its home court advantage to challenge third ranked Avenida (13-5) in Las Palmas on Saturday. The visitors from Salamanca managed to secure only two-point victory 75-73. However their fans expected much easier game. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Gran Canaria. Strangely Gran Canaria outrebounded Avenida 44-29 including a 32-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. Canadian forward Bridget Carleton (185-1997, college: Iowa St.) nailed 12 points and 6 rebounds for the winning side and Nigerian-American forward Michaela Onyenwere (183-1999, college: UCLA) accounted for 11 points. Avenida's coach Roberto Iniguez used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Mali power forward Sika Kone (190-2002) came up with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds and American center Rachel Hollivay (196-1993, college: Rutgers) added 16 points and 10 rebounds respectively for Gran Canaria in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The victory was the third consecutive win for Avenida. Defending champion maintains third place with 13-5 record having just one point less than leader Girona, which they share with Zaragoza. Gran Canaria at the other side dropped to the eighth position with ten games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Avenida will meet at home IDK Eustotren (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Gran Canaria will play against Ensino in Lugo and hope to secure a win.
