Everything went according to plan when thirteenth ranked Jairis (7-11) defeated bottom-ranked Tenerife (2-16) in San Cristobal 88-80 on Sunday. Jairis made 26-of-32 free shots (81.3 percent) during the game. Jairis outrebounded Tenerife 55-25 including a 18-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. Bosnian Melisa Brcaninovic (193-1999, agency: BeoBasket) nailed 22 points and 7 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) for the winning side and Portuguese guard Maria Bettencourt (173-1991) accounted for 17 points and 7 rebounds. Jairis' coach Lucas Fernandez allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American guard Aisha Sheppard (175-1998, college: Virginia Tech, agency: Green Sports Management) came up with 23 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import Stephanie Madden (186-1988, college: Langston) added 10 points and 5 rebounds respectively for Tenerife in the defeat. Four Tenerife players scored in double figures. Jairis moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with Cadi La Seu. Tenerife lost their fifth game in a row. They stay at the bottom position with 16 games lost. Jairis will meet higher ranked Estudiantes (#9) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Tenerife will play against Gernika (#7) and hope to secure a win.
