Regular Season Round 17: Athena - Hamar 63-80

There was no surprise in Reykjavík where 7th ranked Athena (6-9) was defeated by fifth ranked Hamar (9-7) 80-63 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Hamar. Athena managed to win second period 22-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Hamar forced 20 Athena turnovers. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Hamar made 8 blocks. Dutch forward Yvette Adriaans (186-1996) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 26 points and 14 rebounds for the winners and American guard Jenna Mastellone (178-1999, college: SFU) chipped in 19 points and 5 rebounds. Four Hamar players scored in double figures. Forward Asa Wolfram (176-2005) responded with 18 points and 6 rebounds and Bulgarian guard Iolanda Cossa (167-1995) scored 20 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Hamar moved-up to fourth place. Loser Athena keeps the seventh position with nine games lost. Hamar will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Athena will play against Armann (#6) in Reykjavik and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
