Rather expected game when 5th ranked Varese (10-8) lost on the road to third ranked Tortona (13-5) 103-91 on Sunday. Tortona dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Varese's 32. They outrebounded Varese 44-33 including 31 on the defensive glass. Tortona shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 54.5 percentage. American point guard Semaj Christon (190-1992, college: Xavier) notched 26 points and 5 assists to lead the effort and the former international point guard Ariel Filloy (190-1987, agency: Interperformances) supported him with 21 points. Even 28 points and 8 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) by American Markel Brown (191-1992, college: OK State) did not help to save the game for Varese. His fellow American import swingman Jaron Johnson (196-1992, college: Louisiana Tech) added 20 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Tortona have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain third position with 13-5 record behind leader Milano. Loser Varese keeps the fifth place with eight games lost. Tortona will meet at home Trieste (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Varese will play against the league's leader Milano (#1) and hope to secure a win.
