Regular Season Round 16: Thor Thorl - Valur 106-74

Leading Valur (12-4) recorded its fourth loss in Thorlakshofn. Visitors were rolled over by tenth ranked Thor Thorl (6-10) 106-74. It looked good early as Valur took a 1-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Thor Thorl had a 29-14 second period charge getting the lead and Valur was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 74-106. Thor Thorl dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Valur's 24 and made 21-of-27 charity shots (77.8 percent) during the game. They outrebounded Valur 43-31 including a 38-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. Thor Thorl players were unselfish on offense dishing 28 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Valur's players. They brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. The winners were led by American point guard Vinnie Shahid (180-1998, college: NDSU) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 26 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists (made all of his twelve free throws !!!) and international swingman Styrmir Thrastarson (200-2001, college: Davidson, agency: Blacktop Management) supported him with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Even 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists by the former international guard Kari Jonsson (192-1997, college: Drexel) did not help to save the game for Valur. British forward Callum Lawson (198-1996, college: ACU, agency: Players Group) added 15 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Thor Thorl have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain tenth position with 6-10 record. Defending champion Valur dropped to the second place with four games lost. They share the position with Keflavik. Thor Thorl will play against league's second-placed Keflavik on the road in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Valur's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Reykjavik KR.
