Second Stage Round 6: Kataja - Kotka 102-114

The most important game in the last round took place in Joensuu between third ranked Kataja (14-13) and sixth ranked Kotka (13-15) on Saturday night. Kataja was defeated by Kotka at home 102-114. The guests trailed by 9 points after first quarter, but they stormed back winning two of next three quarters and won the game by 12 points. Kotka shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 51.7 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. It was a good game for American guard Brandon Tabb (193-1995, college: BCU) who led his team to a victory with 27 points and 5 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Swingman Vili Nyman (198-1998) contributed with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Tabb is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American forward Galin Smith (206-1998, college: Maryland) replied with 31 points and 8 rebounds (on 14-of-18 shooting from the field) and his fellow American import guard Lamonte Turner (188-1997, college: Tennessee) added 21 points and 12 assists in the effort for Kataja. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Kataja's coach Petri Virtanen rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Kotka maintains sixth position with 13-15 record, which they share with Pyrinto and Kobrat. Kataja at the other side keeps the third place with 13 games lost. Kotka is looking forward to face higher ranked Vilpas (#5) in Salo in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Kataja will play on the road against the league's leader Kauhajoki and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
